Still, We Show Up: From Independence Day Joy to Hurricane Recovery in Trelawny

On August 2, 2025, Hummingbird Charities visited the Trelawny Infirmary to celebrate Jamaica’s 65th Independence with the residents and the hardworking team who care for them. It was a simple idea with big meaning: show up with warmth, conversation, and a reminder that every life deserves to be celebrated.

That day, we saw what we always see when we’re in community—the Jamaican spirit. The kind that doesn’t wait for perfect conditions. The kind that laughs, gives thanks, and makes room for joy, even when life has been heavy.

A return none of us expected

Three months later, we returned to Trelawny—this time after the devastation of Hurricane Melissa. The infirmary had been destroyed, and the residents were being sheltered at Hague Primary School in Falmouth.

The location changed, but the mission didn’t.

Because when storms take buildings, communities build people back up.

Food—because “staff of life” is more than a saying

Three months after Hurricane Melissa — still we show up.

We came to bring comfort the way Jamaicans often do: through food. Not fancy. Not complicated. Just intentional—prepared with care, served with dignity.

On the second visit, we prepared and served:

• Hot dogs
• Burgers
• Crispy, seasoned fries

It wasn’t only a meal. It was a moment—something warm in hand, something familiar in a world that had shifted.

The Hummingbird way

A hummingbird doesn’t stop moving—not because it’s frantic, but because it’s built for a purpose. That’s our energy: constant motion, unwavering strength, and a heart that never stops.

In August, we came with a celebration.
In November, we came with solidarity.
And in both moments, the message was the same: you are not alone.

Resilience doesn’t always sound like a speech. Sometimes it sounds like greetings across a table. Sometimes it looks like a line forming patiently for a plate of food. Sometimes it feels like hope—quiet, steady, and real.

And like the hummingbird, we will keep moving—returning, rebuilding, and reminding Jamaica’s most vulnerable that they matter.
